Dr. Fielding's Course

Mrs. Dalloway

·

This week I´ve gone further with my reading of Virginia Woolf´s Mrs. Dalloway. I´ve found the book to be quite enjoyable thus far. However, there has been instances when I find myself feeling quite mournful for the character´s in the book. Specifically, Septimus has become a character of interest and I´ve come to think of this man frequently in recent days. This poor man soul is being completely tortured having been in the War. His mind seems to be having difficulty with his transition into real life after this horrible experience of the war. I only hope that there may be some future remedy for such an illness. Septimus proved he himself could not handle the constant fits that are brought on at an unknown frequency.
I found a particular interest in the wife of poor Septimus. She certainly faced a challenged relationship with her loved one from almost second to second if not minute to minute. I can relate to her as I have done much traveling in my time and see her frustration. She has been taken away from everything that is familiar to her and worse she is stuck in a bad relationship. This is not because Septimus and Rezia are incompatible but because of Septimus constant battle with PTSD. I truly empathize with these characters as I myself have faced challenges time and time again.
The doctor who drove Septimus to take his life is another character whom I paid close attention to while reading. I was taken aback by this man’s suggestion that Septimus should simply be taken to rest for a period of time. This is an attempt to keep the man sane, but I can only imagine Septimus being drove further into insanity if he were left to lay in a bed.
The man is set off by almost anything. I´ve noted a few time Septimus was triggered by an everyday occurrence. The car backfire, the sky writer, and people in the park all set off his symptoms. If Septimus were to be taken into custody and left to ‘rest’ I believe he would have still killed himself. Doctors and psychologist certainly must wake up and find the right way to treat this PTSD as it is sure to be effecting thousands of people around the world.
