Dr. Fielding's Course

Impression of Mrs. Dalloway

·

I believe that Clarissa Dalloway understood what being a wife was all about. It was her duty to throw parties and entertain her guests and be sure everyone was having a good time. I was right with Mrs. Dalloway being absolutely shocked that the death of that poor crazy man was brought up at her party. That was certainly not in the category appropriate party conversation that all women would had learned at finishing school! It would had been difficult for me to hold my tongue and express my opinions on several of the guests, but Clarissa was the perfect hostess and was polite to everyone. I have to say that I believe Woolf finished the book as she did without any climax occurring between Peter and Clarissa because nothing would ever occur between them. Clarissa was an honorable woman and would stick with her marriage that she is content with. I could only believe that Clarissa, Peter, and Sally exchanged a few words and stories before each person went on their own ways.
