What Horror is This?

·

They has me shaking in my pants. I have no idea how someone could write words as dark as this, painting a picture as depressing as this. I am not sure there exists a cause just enough to justify people losing their legs or their sight or getting syphilis or outright dying. I am no pacifist; I am willing to fight if it seems fighting is necessary, but I do not think I would ever participate in a fight in which my limbs, mind, or life are seriously at stake. I do not know what “cause” the men mentioned in this poem are fighting for, but I feel sorry for them nonetheless. I am sure they would all like nothing more than to return home and be with their family and friends. While I agree with this Bishop that the ways of God can be strange, I fail to understand that God would have anything to do with horrors such as this; I do not believe for one moment that God would encourage people to engage in any action that would have them losing their legs or lives. Not any God that I am aware of, anyway.
