Death in the Poems
·
In the Siegfried Sassoon poems it is incredible to read of so much death. It is not common for me to know of so much death let alone would I be able to write about it. This man who created these literary pieces must have much personal experience in death. The first piece “They” was tough to read. The writing kept saying ‘boys’ which made me believe these are men younger than the legal age limit. I tried looking past this and realized that these ‘boys’ or young men served well and know that God is with them even if some of their comrades were hurt during the war. The last line “The ways of God are strange!” is a very true statement. God is mysterious though I feel as if my sister would have more to say about such things.
I go on to the next piece, “The Rear-Guard” which disturbed me a bit. This man ,in the second stanza, who kick the other (whom is dead) just surprises me. I do not know a man who could be so cruel. My husband would never treat another man in such a way. It is simply disrespectful of a man to treat another fellow man in such a way.
I would like to jump to the last piece “Disabled” which is sad. A man loses his legs and then seems to be shunned by everyone he knew. The women treat him with such disgust that it is truly a bad look on women. I know that although I may not marry a man in such conditions, I would befriend him. I would treat him with the kind of respect he deserves. He served the country and then they think him not worthy of their attention. It is a disgrace on women to have them portrayed this way. Not all women are like this, though there may be some.
