The Waste Land

·

These tales are so much darker than I am used to.  I find myself struggling to understand all the references this Eliot makes.  I wish I had a more thorough education to better understand the poem.  I do say my favorite part is the beginning of The Burial of the Dead.  I thought the way Eliot described the birth and regrowth of new plants and flowers from the deadened winter ground was beautiful.  I have to say I also enjoyed the passage entitled Death by Water.  The sad tale of Phlebas meeting his demise due to drowning.  Is this a reference back to the drowned sailor in the tarot card pack?  I would love to have the chance to meet this Eliot fellow to better understand this poem.  I think he could offer me knowledge that I have not yet known.
