The Waste Land

·

What have I read? I am not too sure what I was supposed to get from these poems? The first one “The Burial of the Dead”, I mean, you would think the title of this poem would tell us all about what this poem is to be about! The first line states: “April is the cruelest month”, maybe it an be cruel…there is the said phrase “April showers bring May flowers”? (I just happened to find this said “modern” quote since I have had to partake in this modernist literature), so perhaps, maybe that is why April is such a cruel month? There are no real flowers and it seems to be rather gloomy so, the following lines make sense I suppose. Then, it turns into confusion…I had no idea what this fellow was speaking of. The change that happened so quickly in this poem was rather unusual. I reread it, and it seems as though there is a woman that he may have been fond of and he is now thinking of her in memory? However, then it seems as though there is yet another shift in the poem, there seems to be a past and present view of this poem, however it is rather confusing and one I do not wish to continue to focus on any longer. The following poem was titled “A Game of Chess”…yet another confusing bit. It seems to be a tale of romance? Although one can not be very sure. I can also see what looks to be bits of suicide? It is rather strange, yet sad it may seem. The ending seems as though it is a copycat of the great “Romeo and Juliet”. Rather strange indeed…what could these so called “modern” poems try to tell the readers? Is it more on about another element such as depression? Sadness? Grief? Is the theme for the two said poems about dealing with lost and how it can affect one said individual?
