The Unfortunate Relationships…

·

So many of the people now surrounding us are unsure of their world, trying desperately to make sense of it. March, Banford, and Henry are all attempting to do so, though their beliefs differ. It is troubling to me that yet again there is such an alienation from the natural world; none of these three reach to communicate with it properly. Banford is unforgiving and afraid, and Henry has confounded the natural order and power of the world with brutality and sensuality. He takes the natural world’s offerings literally, without accounting for humanity’s interpretation. Instead of being able to celebrate the evolution of humanity and society, beauty in action and thought, the violence and its acceptance has demolished some of the loyalty to these ideals. Does no one look into themselves with honesty? March certainly is unable to focus internally, on her beliefs and drives. The effect of this fox on the young woman March is telling; both she and Henry are drawn to it. I see less of the fox in Henry than I see in March. She seeks freedom, but is not focused enough to fight for it. Henry is drawn to freedom in theory, yet it is selfish freedom. He does not understand what it truly means, and is given to pointless conquering of other beings. The understanding of human relationships here is also changing; we all have witnessed this, there seems to be less depth to them. Not only is it seemingly difficult for internal reflection about oneself and what others must be feeling, it is also a struggle for many to provide a definition about what a relationship must be. Where once I saw so many people who attempted to make each other happy as best they could, wanted above all to touch another person’s soul, here it seems as though relationships are either highly sensual and animalistic or based on dependency and a need for purpose. In neither of these cases is the relationship healthy as it should be. What other understandings of human dependency and relationships can you compare with this?
