The Fox Part 1
·
Hmm…what has happened? At first it seems as though these women in the past reading (Mina Loy I believe her name was) were “feminist”, now in this new story, they seem to be rather…fond of each other would you say? The two women are in what seems to be some kind of relationship and it seems as though we do not know much on their names at first, they go by their last names “Branford”and March”. Branford is characterized as “small, thin and delicate”, while March is described as “robust”; so, we see that she was manly here. It seems as though the March…”lady” was supposed to be the “man” of this so called relationship with these two. She learned of these manly trades such as carpentry and joinery. Branford’s grandfather allowed this “relationship” to occur because he did not want his dear granddaughter to alone. Why not find his granddaughter another young man to both of their liking? Why did he have to go about and find a woman who seemed to be “close enough” to manly? It is a rather strange situation…later on, there is a fellow named Henry that comes to the farm. It seems as though once upon a time, his grandfather used to live or own the farm and he was unaware of his grandfather’s passing. Moving further on into the story, we see that the effects of the war has caused a shortage of food supplies and work for people. We see the issue with the fox that seems to come about on the farm. Could this fox be a symbol of some kind? Could the fox be a character in this story? Perhaps the fox is the Branford lady? She has a dream about this fox and in this dream his tail burns her mouth…could this mean that she does not understand what she wants in life? She is involved with this said “man woman” yet, she is unsure about her life, especially when this Henry fellow wants to marry her.
