Queries of March and Banford’s relationship

·

Dr. Lydgate, what an interesting analysis you put on the relationships between March and Banford.  I did not want to say anything beforehand, but I must admit now that you have said it… I first thought of March and Banford as lovers.  Well, it was odd actually.  I didn’t quite know what to think.  The women lived on their own, one took on the manly role while the other took on more of a woman’s role, and they went to bed together.  But I have to say that I pushed that assumption out of my mind because I thought, ‘Why, that is just ridiculous.  Respectable women do not have romantic relationships with other women!  Unheard of!’  And yes, I know, I know, I should not have been so quick to judge these women.  My hastiness has always been a downfall… my husband reminds me of this regularly.  But, in the case of March, I questioned what else on earth would cause a woman to take on a role so clearly reserved for a man but an aberrant mindset?  Needless to say, I was quite relieved when the boy Henry came to desire March as his wife.  Although, I do continue to stand by my belief that he was not the right choice for her.
