Dr. Fielding's Course

My advice to you, Mary

·

Mary, dear, I don’t believe you have to worry about the future and feeling as if are an old woman if you are anything like me, which I believe you are.  I feel very much as if I am still in the peak of my years.  Rather than worrying, appreciate the time that you have spent and navigate the future as it comes.  But, of course you are wise, I trust you to figure all of this out.  I do commend Mrs. Dalloway on her liveliness as you just mentioned, although I wonder whether she is fully satisfied with the life she leads or no?  She seems to think about that Peter fellow often.  What I think she should do is just move on!  Poor dear, she is stuck in the past.  Someone needs to remind her that she has a husband, and his name is not Peter!  My, if her husband could know what goes on in her head and how often she thinks of Peter, I do believe he would be displeased.  It is wrong for a woman to think of another, is it not, Mary?

Also, what is this about “feeling” as though you have made the right choice in marrying Fred.  Mary, you should not feel, you should know that you have made the right choice and express that there is no other for you, like I do with your father.  There is no other for me besides him, and I never regret it!  Nor do I think of other men.  Mary, you must know.  Unless you have made the wrong choice.  Mr. Farebrother is still available, you know.

That was a joke, my dear.  Once you commit to a husband, you commit.  Someone should have told Mrs. Dalloway this.  Oh, I would have loved to give her some advice.
