More T.S. Eliot

·

I must say, once again I did not understand what I read while finishing the remaining of the T.S. Eliot poems. The first one that was to be continued “The Fire Sermon”, the title seems to reference another religious aspect of some sort. A sermon relates to religion and the church, which one, I don’t know for sure, however, I know that much. Then there is the term fire. So maybe this is a sinful sermon? Or perhaps a bad sermon that makes no sense? Throughout the entire poem, it seems as though, this is a battle of religion for people. However, we also see a mixture of the past coming back to possibly haunt the present. Or perhaps I am reading too much into all of it, or possibly over-analyzing the lines I have read. The next poem that was read was “Death by Water”…rather short and it seems as though it was…the term…”straight to the point”. There was death on the sea it seems. I did not know who this Phlebas character was supposed to be, however, I did in fact research the character….I did not find much, it seems as though it was just a character, one that was made up. However, this character it seems is dead, his body is floating in the sea and the creatures of the world are picking at the body. How did he pass? Was it a drowning? Why has no one found him or her for that matter? The final poem was “What the Thunder Said”…it seems as though this one, from the title was about another strong possible disengagement with religion. It seems as though all of the holy places within the cities, have collapsed, it almost seems as though it has been destroyed by a bomb or possibly just terror throughout the cities. It is as if there is a terrible war that has happened throughout the cities or possibly a play with God and the destruction of the cities.
