Lunar Baedeker and The General
·
I say this Ms. Mina Loy seems to be quite the verbose scholar. It does give me a fond overview of her work in Lunar Baedeker. Such usage of various myth and legend folded into her poem will make any fine connoisseur of the art tremble in excitement. Although one could see where the average and lesser educated reader might stumble upon the reading of this poem. It would also not be out of the realm of possibility to say that numerous readings were in order to extract the full meaning of this poem. Regardless of a citizen’s level of education we can all agree that these forms of literature are desperately needed in the generations to come.
Now as for Siegfried Sassoon’s The General, it would suffice to say that I have had personal experience with this type of officer all too often in my role as a military surgeon. These smiling devils would send the pitiable masses to the frontlines of battle with inadequate preparation and training. Those circumstances would precipitate a meeting with me later under less than auspicious stars. These young men would be ridden with wounds, but that is not what would bring the angel of death to their doorway. Instead typhus, being the disease of choice is what would take away many of the young men of my generation. They would degrade in mind while their body was racked with chills or fever until being embraced by the reaper. It is not with fond memories that I recall those circumstances. However, it is necessary for all men to find a way to serve the land that gave them birth. Honor and Duty should be held up in exemplar for all patriots as a sign to aspire for and as a goal to reach with outstretched hands.
