Dr. Fielding's Course

Do not upset yourself overly, Good Mariner

·

Oh Mariner, I have visited you, too, although in different form from that with which I have visited William Wordsworth. And you also have a sensitive soul, perhaps made so by that which you have experienced, but profound nonetheless. You must feel such kinship with those men, who have seen inexplicable things and have lost innocence. There have been many horrors, yes, and this makes the veil of suffering all the more opaque. But remember, the horrors have accompanied death without meaning, death without peace, and death without dignity. Indeed, as you say, humanity has been fractured. They are split from one another and split from their own spirits when they see such hideous realities. This does not mean they will learn; I have seen humanity leave my offered knowledge untouched, and know how easily human beings stumble into new ways of causing pain. There may be more horrors, but on an individual level there is always the opportunity to have some meaning, some peace, and some dignity. There are those who may learn. You know this, as you are guided to reveal your story to those you feel to be in need of it. And you may find peace within your spirit, although you are afraid and pained by memory.
