Air Raid…Women can/do make a difference!
·
I am in shock and awe reading this short piece by Woolf. She has out done herself again with a compelling piece of literature. I could not take my eyes off of the pages, I want to read more. I wish she had more to say on the topic. The second paragraph where it starts, “Arms are not given to Englishwomen either to fight the enemy or to defend herself.” I find this to be absurd. It is quite unreasonable for them not to provide with something to defend themselves.
I like the definition of Mental Fight given in the article, “thinking against the current, not with it.” Going against something means that it is going to be a struggle. Have you ever tried to swim against the current, it is not easy. I feel that there needs to be less of this. More need to start thinking with it. For it they thought with the current there would be less of a struggle.
“It is not true that we are free.” I agree wholeheartedly with this line. “If we were free we should be out in the open, dancing, at the play, or sitting at the window talking together.” These things are so very true. Who do we really talk to? I know that I do not do as much as I would like. I hardly see my family, but that is only because they are not that nice to me. If they were I would love to see my sister and uncle more.
There is so much back and forth on what I agree and disagree with. In general it was a very accomplished article that made its point very clearly. The women need to make sure that the men are taken care after the war is over, after they give up their weapons. It is important for the man not to feel depresses. “We are to compensate the young man for the loss of his glory and of his gun, we must give him access to the creative feelings. We must make happiness.” I try to do this for my husband every day. I wish to make him happy and to see his creativeness go as far as it can. There should be no reason why he should feel differently.
